- Ensure you have some local currency available for use and consider carrying ‘universal’ currency such as US dollars up to the value of approximately £50 for emergencies

- Keep your passport in the hotel safe and carry a photocopy with you at all times
Note: some countries require you to carry a valid form of ID with you at all times
- Check your nearest fire escape route when you first check into a new hotel and familiarise yourself with the hotel security arrangements
- Keep all receipts, including exchange receipts as you may have to prove you obtained your local currency legally
- Respect local customs and dress codes, particularly if visiting religious sites, markets and rural communities
- Be aware of local scams
- Make sure you have identification on your person, contact numbers for someone to call in an emergency and a fully-charged phone
