Professor Karen Stanton

Professor Karen Stanton joined the University as the Vice-Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor for External Relations in September 2010. Karen is the Executive lead for marketing and communications, community engagement, fundraising and alumni relations and developing relationships with a broad range of external groups and stakeholders. In addition, Karen has executive responsibility for GCU’s newly established Campus in London, GCU London.  Professor Stanton gained her first degree in History and her MEd from the University of Sheffield and an MSc in Information Science from the University of Manchester. Prior to her appointment as Vice-Principal at Glasgow Caledonian University, Karen was Chief Information Officer at King’s College London, having previously worked at the universities of Nottingham, Birmingham and Sheffield Hallam where she was responsible for executive portfolios covering student services, internationalisation, external relations, planning, learning resources, IT, business and community engagement. Her responsibilities have also included information services remits at international campuses at the University of Nottingham in China and Malaysia.  At King’s Karen was the Director of the Centre for e-Research, a 4* RAE rated team. Karen has also worked as a researcher for the Home Office, the Government Communications Headquarters in Cheltenham and at the BBC.
Professor Stanton has a broad knowledge of the UK university system and significant experience of university senior management, having previously been a member of the Executive Board at King’s College London. She has managed large teams (over 500 staff) and significant financial resources and major projects and change initiatives. 
Professor Stanton is a member of the JISC Advance Board and the National Committee of Inquiry into the Changing Learner Experience.
