In 2009, GCU joined the prestigious international Santander Universities network. With more than 900 universities, the Santander Universities network is a remarkable and impressive collaboration, supported uniquely by Santander to encourage exchange of ideas, people, knowledge and experience across higher education. The network aims to encourage greater understanding and co-operation between institutions and people, especially between the countries of Latin America and Europe. The Chairman of Santander, Emilio Botin, sees the network that his Bank supports to the tune of 600 million Euros over the coming three years, as the core community engagement and social responsibility programme of the company. He has said that higher education is the most important driver of social improvement.
In 2010, Ana Botin, became the first woman to head a major UK bank. Her visit to GCU will be the first she has made to the campus of a UK member of the Santander Universities network, since she took up her current post.
Emilio Botin and Ana Botin will engage in a discussion about their work and their aspirations both for Santander Universities network and the links between the bank and member institutions such as GCU.
