Working With Our Community

Community initiatives

Off campus, the university is focusing on Sighthill, a community in the north of the city which suffers from a variety of challenges, including limited access to services. Led by the Applied Knowledge Exchange team, and backed by the expertise of the academic schools, the university has mounted a project to explore the sustainability of a new community centre equipped to meet the varied needs of local people.

Already Vision Sciences has gathered equipment to establish a weekly eye clinic, while the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Community Health hopes to offer a range of services including a UNICEF infant feeding class, and maternity and child health groups.

The university’s commitment to improving the health of Glaswegians is further exemplified by the Principal’s position as chair of the Glasgow Health Commission for the City of Glasgow, which met for the first time in June. A joint initiative involving Glasgow City Council, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and the Glasgow Centre for Population Health, the commission hopes to transform the health of Glaswegians by synthesising thinking on sustainable health improvements in the city and making recommendations for the city’s partners to reduce health inequalities.

"I am delighted that Professor Gillies has agreed to chair the commission. The combined expertise and input that will come from the commission members’ breadth of knowledge and experience means we will have a fighting chance of improving the lives of all our citizens.”
- Councillor Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council
