You may not have thought of including a gift to your university in your Will, however as a charity, legacies form an important source of funding helping to shape your university and the student experience. Leaving a legacy is possibly the most personal gift anyone can make to GCU.
With your support you can ensure that future generations share the same incredible experience you had when studying here. Gifts of any size really can have an impact for many years to come. And if you feel that you would like to support us but have other priorities at the moment, a legacy gift is an opportunity to make a lasting contribution with no immediate financial outlay. It can also be tax effective as gifts to charities are exempt from inheritance tax.
What you can support
Unrestricted legacy gifts can provide Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) with the greatest impact as they allow the university to meet its greatest needs and respond to emerging priorities.
We understand and welcome the fact that our donors may wish to consider a specifically directed legacy gift to a department or area of research that they are particularly passionate about for example:
How to include GCU in your Will
Here is an example of wording that can be used to remember Glasgow Caledonian University in your Will:
"I give to Glasgow Caledonian University, Cowcaddens Road, Glasgow G4 0BA, Registered Scottish Charity No. SC 021474 (you can choose from the following types of gift)...
If you already have a Will
Please don't change your current Will by crossing out or writing instructions on it. You need to complete a codicil. It is best to make a codicil by referring to details in your Will such as date and clause numbers.. You will need to sign and date the document and have it witnessed by two people, just like your Will. Keep the codicil with your current Will in a safe place. Send, or give, a copy of the Will and codicil in an envelope to a friend, solicitor or charity with a note indicating where the original is held. Your solicitor will be able to advise you further if required.
What next?
We understand that these are important decisions which you will want to make in your own time. If you are considering remembering GCU in your Will, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss these options with you. Any information you provide us with is strictly confidential and non-binding. We appreciate that circumstances change and you always have the right to change your mind about your gift.
