A range of special scholarships and awards are available to assist with study at Glasgow Caledonian University.

The Daiwa Scholarship

The Daiwa Scholarship is a unique 19-month programme of language study, work placement and homestay in Japan. Daiwa Scholarships offer young and talented UK citizens with strong leadership potential, the opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills, and to access expertise and knowledge relevant to their career goals.

Since 1991, 106 Daiwa Scholars - including scientists, artists, academics, lawyers and architects - have benefited from the Daiwa Scholarships. Daiwa Scholarships are provided by the Foundation to encourage better understanding between both countries. NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE OF JAPAN OR JAPANESE IS NECESSARY.

Magnus Magnusson Scholarships

Awards of up to £5,000 will be presented to students in their second year upwards, or to young researchers in the early stages of their academic careers. Applications from any discipline and from any part of the University or for almost any kind of proposal that will help individuals to reach their dreams are welcome. However, judges will be especially pleased to receive applications from areas relating to any of Magnus Magnusson’s personal interests, including the media, history, language, literature and the natural environment. Applicants must demonstrate achievement in their chosen area, and have a clear plan to take their work forward.

Helena Kennedy Foundation Badged award

The Helena Kennedy Foundation has developed the concept of the 'badged bursary' as a means of attracting more students from disadvantaged backgrounds into specific universities, degree courses and areas of employment. Badged bursaries are funded by organisations that support the Foundation's purpose and mission and want to target this support directly to students without incurring significant administrative burden and cost themselves, as all these processes are handled by the Foundation on behalf of the supporting organisation which includes Glasgow Caledonian University.

Moffat Scholarships


The Moffat Centre for Travel and Tourism Business Development offers scholarships for UK/EU students on programmes in travel and tourism. These are awarded annually based upon academic ability, motivation to undertake a career in the industry and economic need.

Sports Bursary

The Sports Bursary Programme has been designed to assist the university's most talented/promising athletes in developing their sporting potential while studying at Glasgow Caledonian.  Applicants must have reached or demonstrated a particular level of standard to be considered for the programme.   The Sports Bursary Programme is run in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow University and Strathclyde University. 

ORSAS


This award is designed to offer International students pursuing a research degree in order to encourage excellent and high quality research. The awards are granted on a competitive basis to International Postgraduate research students of outstanding merit and research potential.

International Scholarships in the Caledonian Business School

Scholarships of £1,000 per year are available to overseas students (non-EU) for each year of the programme on all CBS undergraduate programmes and a further 8% discount is available to overseas students paying their tuition fees in full, prior to the programme commencing.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship plan

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK is responsible for this scholarship and it is awarded to those who, due to their capabilities and their potential, can make a significant contribution to their own country.

Canadian scholarships

This is open to all Canadian graduate students (men and women) studying in the UK.  These awards (from £500-£2500) are for academic and artistic studies in the UK, and are exclusively for students who have already commenced their studies in the UK.

Scholarships for Norwegian Students


The main objective for the Heyerdahl Institute is to honour and continue the work of Thor Heyerdahl, citizen of the world, through strengthening international debate, promoting inter-disciplinary research and taking care of our cultural heritage. (5 scholarships available via the Heyerdahl Institute.)

Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowships

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust offers you the Opportunity to increase your knowledge and experience through overseas travel in order to benefit others within your community.

If awarded a Fellowship, you will receive a grant that will cover all your relevant expenses. In 2008 the average grant was £5300, covering a stay of between 4-8 weeks (minimum of 4 weeks) but can be longer. The grant includes return travel, daily living, internal travel and appropriate insurance within the countries visited.  Further information

Masterton Undergraduate Bursaries

Masterton Undergraduate Bursaries in Civil Engineering are available to undergraduates in the School of the Built and Natural Environment and will focus on the study of civil and/or environmental engineering. A maximum of three scholarships of £1000 for each of four years will be awarded annually.

The Kennedy Memorial Trust

The Kennedy Scholarship is an academic award for study at two of the world's finest universities - Harvard and MIT. It can be used to fund a wide variety of programmes at MIT and across all the graduate schools within Harvard - from PhD to LLM, from MPH to March.

It can fund a Visiting Fellowship for a student in the middle of PhD study here in the UK, or a Special Studentship for those wanting a general programme of non-degree study.

To be eligible to apply for a Kennedy Scholarship you must:

  • be a British citizen who is also resident in the UK
  • have attended a secondary school in the UK

either

  • be a recent graduate of a UK university (if you graduated more that 3 years before the year in which the Scholarship is to begin you will not be eligible) or
  • be studying for a first or higher degree and have spent two of the last five years at a UK university
  • have graduated before taking up the Scholarship.

PhD students

If you are currently studying for a PhD in the UK you may use a Kennedy Scholarship to carry out research (as a Visiting Fellow) for an academic year during the course of your doctoral study, but Scholarships will not be awarded to post-doctoral candidates who wish to pursue further research in their own field.
