Essential Information

When considering the costs involved in attending university, it’s always worth bearing in mind that a university education is an investment in your future - helping to increase your career prospects and earnings potential in the long-term. And the good news is there is lots of support available that makes university accessible to everyone.

Here's an overview of the essential information you need to know about fees and finance for university.

Tuition fees

Scottish students do not have to pay tuition fees, but still have to apply each year through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). Other UK students should apply through their Local Education Authority for loans and grants to pay for tuition fees.

Sources of Finance

Student loans

The main source of support for UK students is the Student Loan, applied for through the links above. The amount of the loan depends on your annual income – the higher your parents' income, the lower the loan amount.

Student Loans are paid directly into your bank account in three instalments spaced throughout the academic year.

Other funding

Depending on your circumstances, there are other sources of funding available in addition to the Student Loan. These include the Young Student’s Bursary, Hardship Funds and Loans, and Scholarships.
