Programme Description

This programme aims to assist you in the ability to develop, evaluate and explain appropriate fire protection and management systems. The modules in the early years focuses on the disciplines which underpin the design and evaluation of fire protection systems for buildings. There is also an emphasis on the development of problem-solving and communication skills as well as the application of theoretical principles and techniques. Students may graduate after Year 3 or progress to Honours where you will study the design of fire protection systems and advanced risk analysis techniques and apply these in a Risk Evaluation Project. Computer modelling is used extensively throughout the programme.

Why Choose This Programme?

The programme, originally developed in close partnership with Strathclyde Fire Brigade, is unique in its focus and one of a limited number of fire engineering programmes in the UK. Risk management, forecasting, problem-solving and communication are all essential components of your learning, as is the ability to specify performance levels of buildings when you assess them. It is designed to meet the needs of consultants, building control practitioners and fire service officers in a rapidly evolving design, engineering and regulatory environment. The programme team has strong links with consultants and regulators who support the programme through guest lectures, case study material and site visits. The programme also benefits from the input of Strathclyde Fire Rescue Officers who are associate lecturers.

What You'll Learn

Year 1: Studies will develop a good foundation level understanding of building design, technology and performance.

Year 2: You are introduced to the principles of fire safety analysis and the practice of fire safety design and regulation. You will also develop an understanding of computer aided modelling techniques and risk management.

Year 3: There is an opportunity for students to undertake a work placement for six to eight months. You will extend your learning with studies such as fire dynamics, performance evaluation and fire safety data analysis.

Year 4: An Honours dissertation will be combined with further study of topics such as smoke control systems design and evacuation systems design and fire risk assessment.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods, including coursework activities and formal examinations.

Professional Accreditation

The programme is fully accredited by the Institution of Fire Engineers.

The BSC (Hons) Fire Risk Engineering programme has been recognised as an approved course with academic exemption by the Institution of Fire Engineers. The Institution recognises that successful students of this course will have met the academic criteria for the membership grade of MIFireE.

This is the first programme in the UK to achieve academic exemption unde rthe new IFireE rules.

International Study/Exchanges

There is the opportunity to study in Europe with a partner university which includes language study.

Career Opportunities

Career prospects are excellent, driven by developments in fire safety legislation and the overall size of the construction industry, which employs almost one in ten of the UK working population.
Graduates will find meaningful employment with the fire services, construction companies, consultancies, local authorities and building control organisations.
