Full details are available from our award winning International Student Support Service or on our Welcome to GCU Facebook page.
Programme Description
Throughout the programme you will participate in practical industry events such as fashion competitions and shows and visiting exhibitions and trade fairs. Through numerous fashion projects, you will develop your design skills using the University’s fully equipped Fashion Factory, while simultaneously developing your management, communication and analytical skills to provide you with an all-round commercial approach.
In Year 2, a supervised work placement in a relevant sector plus integrated design project provides practical experience of standard industry equipment including Computer Aided Design (CAD). In the later years of study, there’s a chance to apply your personal design vision and knowledge of commercial considerations to The Fashion Design Portfolio and Fashion Collection and Promotion modules.
You will be encouraged to think analytically and work effectively, both individually and as part of a team.
What You'll Learn
Year 2: Brings the fashion skills together in an integrated design project and a work placement provides experience in a fashion area of your choice. Consumer behaviour and business organisation and management modules complete the year.
Year 3: More advanced fashion projects comprising design, production and promotion are undertaken along with strategic marketing and research methods.
Year 4: The final year includes a live industry sponsored design project, changing perspectives in marketing management and an Honours project that can involve a company partner. In years 2-4 an option module provides further career focus.

Facilities
We believe it’s the resources on campus that make the difference, making high quality learning accessible and reflect our values and aspirations to be dynamic, inclusive and accessible to all.
On this course purpose built, industry standard facilities and equipment, replicate an industrial environment, which provides a central hub for Fashion Business students; this facilitates an authentic practitioner experience from the design process through to the production of garments.
As well as an industrial environment and equipment, Lectra CAD software packages are the most up to date and relevant as used in industry and include:
Kaledo Print
Kaledo Style
Modaris
Diamino
Centrally, our other modern facilities also include the award-winning Saltire Centre, named one of the most innovative learning environments in the UK, and Arc, the university’s recreation and health centre.
And we’re not standing still! We’ve started on the next phase in our Campus Futures development, designed to help us further build on the strengths, while at the same time reducing our carbon footprint.
See the campus for yourself using our 360 Degree tour.
Assessment Methods
Assessments will include the following modes: unseen examinations or class tests, web-based assessments, essays, reports and assignments (individual and group), business simulations and critical analysis of case studies (individual and group), oral, poster, audio-visual or e-presentations (individual and group), practical and design portfolios, event presentation, academic research paper, personal development plan, research proposal and project.
Teaching Methods
This approach supports a broader mission which is to provide a contemporary, challenging and relevant curriculum whereby students are offered opportunities to get close to industry contexts. In sum, the programmes provide opportunities for students to develop cognitive, attitudinal and behavioural skills to allow them to make an immediate contribution to a range of employment situations.
Therefore, a variety of means are incorporated including: Lectures provide the main form of knowledge input and foundations; guest practitioner speakers are utilised to complement the formal lectures, as well as seminar discussion, workshops, practicals, theoretical papers, case studies, simulation exercises, group work, projects, presentations. ‘Live’ organisational projects will also form key elements of module delivery.
The programme teaching team also make significant use of new technology in its delivery of material. This will include GCULearn for student communication and formative and summative assessment, web-based facilities such as blogs and other online discussions, and combinations of new, downloadable technologies and media such as podcasts, vid-pods and wikis.
The learning and teaching methods used encourage students to develop a reflective and lifelong approach to learning. Subject specific, practice based modules, take place within our purpose built industry standard facilities. Professional industry guest lecturers enrich the learning experience, through personal insight into industry issues from a practitioner position, and enhance the contextualisation of curriculum.
Live projects take place, with specific industry partners, setting design briefs and providing one to one student feedback. The annual fashion show is an exciting event that students love to become involved with. As well as promoting Glasgow Caledonian University, the fashion show exposes student work and profiles to a wider audience from both industry partners to the general public.
International exchange is encouraged through formal and informal links with appropriate institutions, for example:
• America - Iowa & Delaware,
• Canada - Ryerson
• Finland – Lahti & Metropolia
• Paris
Annual study trips are organised to major fashion cities such as New York, Paris and Milan
