Programme Description

This programme aims to offer first level registered nurses access to specialist pathways of Public Health and Occupational Health Nursing. On meeting the Standards of Proficiency for SCPHN (NMC 2004), they will be eligible to apply to enter the third part of the Nursing, Midwifery and Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Professional Register. The programme will provide continued personal and professional development in a career of lifelong learning, preparing practitioners as part of the wider public health workforce, to meet the current and future challenges related to public health.

Programme Structure

This programme enables first level registered nurses to undertake study at an appropriate SCQF level to acquire knowledge, skills and attributes which are commensurate with safe and effective specialist community public health nursing practice. In line with NMC requirements, these programmes consist of 50% theory and 50% practice and entrants may undertake full-time study over one calendar year, or part-time study, normally over two calendar years. On entry to one of the SCPHN pathways listed below, each student will index with NHS Education for Scotland as undertaking a programme of study leading to the award of one of the following Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registerable specialist community public health nursing qualifications: Occupational Health Nursing Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting/School Nursing)

Assessment Methods

Our teaching programme is split evenly between theory and practice with students having to pass both elements to pass the module as a whole. The students who successfully complete this element will be eligible to enter Part Three of the Nursing and Midwifery Council register.
There are six modules to complete which are mainly assessed through essay work.
In the second year, there is an exam and dissertation to complete. Students must also complete a Practice Learning Plan while in practice over the whole programme.

Teaching Methods

Our students are taught in a traditional face-to-face setting with additional support from on-line resources on GCU Learn.

Each student is allocated their own practice teacher on starting the programme who remains with them throughout their studies. The time spent in practice is mutually negotiated between the student and Practice Teacher.

Employment Details

This programme is for first level registered nurses who wish to practice as a health visitor or school nurse within the community.

Students who successfully complete this element will be eligible to enter Part Three of the Nursing and Midwifery Council register.
