Programme Description
Considering the demand for Waste Managers and waste minimisation practitioners, as well as recent developments in waste management, this programme is designed for students to acquire the understanding and skills necessary to meet the present needs and future challenges of waste management agencies and industries. Although much of the details of waste management regulations and pratice are based on the requirements of the industry in the UK, the principles have a much wider application, and hence the programme is also designed to appeal to those intending to practice overseas. The applied nature of the subject is recognised and a variety of practical aspects are included in the modules.
Programme Structure
Compulsary Modules: Semester A: Sustainable Waste Management; Health, Safety and Environmental Management. Semester B: Advanced Waste Treatment Technologies; Contaminated Land and Landfill Engineering. Elective Modules (two to be selected each semester): Semester A: Environmental Pollution; Monitoring and Analysis; Resources and Sustainability; Environmental Planning and Impact Assessment; Energy and Sustainability. Semester B: Water Quality and Waste Water Treatment; GIS and Environmental Management; Renewable Energy Technologies; Energy Technology; Integrated Case Study. MSc: In addition to requirements for PgD; students complete a major project and submit a dissertation.

Combination of coursework, exams and projects.
Professional Accreditation
The programme is fully accredited by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM).

Waste management in the Uk is a multi-million pound industry and offers a variety of career opportunities, with a range of different employers, such as: local authorities, regulatory bodies, water companies, waste disposal organisations, environmental monitoring organisations, environment consultancies and organisations involved with identification and remediation of contaminated land. There is considerable demand for waste managers and waste minimisation practitioners both in Europe and further afield.
