Minimum RequirementsNormally, an applicant can gain entry to the PgC Social Enterprise if they have achieved the equivalent of a UK degree. Alternatively applicants with relevant work experience will always be considered. Two references are also required. Individuals applying for this programme need to be working in some capacity in the sector or with the sector in order to undertake the work based learning module.
Technology RequirementsAn element of this programme uses online learning for students to take advantage of the web-based resources they will need access to computer equipment and the internet. A high level of technical knowledge is not required. It is sufficient to be comfortable with using a word processor package, email, and have some experience of searching the web.

Programme Description

The Postgraduate Certificate in Social Enterprise is the only postgraduate degree in Scotland designed specifically for the growing Social Enterprise sector. It was developed through the collaboration of Glasgow Caledonian University and the Scottish Social Enterprise Academy in to provide voluntary and community-based organisations with techniques to aid them in demonstrate greater entrepreneurial flair, innovation and self-reliance.The programme examines the context, structure, value and workings of social enterprise as an emerging sector in the UK. It covers the distinctive nature of social enterprise as a business model taking into account social, economic, environmental, legal, financial, operational and cultural factors. It explores the policy context and drivers for the sector. It then analyses the leadership and management challenges facing social enterprise practitioners and public sector partners.Practical ApproachWe recognise that full-time attendance is not practical for many students. The programme is designed around 3 intensive, conference style weekends which provide the basis for independent study and the work based project, which is a key element of the programme.Who is it for?The programme is intended for managers in the sector, professionals involved in promoting social enterprise, aspiring and existing social entrepreneurs, public sector advisors, mentors, managers from existing voluntary organisations, local and national government officials and executives from economic development agencies.You will:Understand current issues, challenges and strategies in social enterprise within the context of the UKDevelop original and creative responses to social enterprise problems and issuesPlan and implement a strategy to resolve a complex social enterprise issue facing your organisation resulting in a clearly communicated and professionally valuable conclusion

How Does This Programme Work?

FLEXIBLE MODE OF ATTENDANCEWe recognise that full-time attendance is not practical for many students. The programme is delivered over two semesters and requires some work in the summer. In order to facilitate study by busy professionals, the only required time on campus is during three conference style weekends.STUDY AND SUPPORTThroughout the programme you will study a key set text and undertake independent reading and research through a range of books and journals. You will also be expected to make study visits and reflect on case studies between the conference weekends.You will be supported throughout the year by a dedicated and sophisticated Virtual Learning Environment, the Blackboard online classroom, which facilitates a range of interactive learning activities via computer, either at home or at work.CONFERENCE WEEKENDS1) The first weekend starts on a Friday night at 6pm for a programme introduction. Saturday will be a combination of theory lectures and presentations with seminar work. Sunday will combine seminar work and will be used to introduce the project module work which runs throughout the programme.2) The second weekend involves group time over Saturday and Sunday, with the final hours on Sunday allocated to work on the project module.3) The third weekend involves seminars and lectures on Saturday and seminars and tutorials on the project module on Sunday.
