Occupational Therapy (Pre-Registration)

MSc Occupational Therapy (pre-registration) is a modularised programme within a trimester system. The focus is on the integration of theory and practice. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 1000 hours of practice education across the duration of the programme, within a wide variety of settings, learning alongside occupational therapists and other health and social care practitioners, and gaining experience working with marginalized groups.

Occupational Therapists work with people who have physical, emotional or social problems and use activities in order to help them reach their maximum level of function and independence.

Programme Description

MSc Occupational Therapy (pre-registration) is a modularised programme within a trimester system. The focus is on the integration of theory and practice.  Students are required to undertake a minimum of 1000 hours of practice education for the duration of the programme within a wide variety of settings, learning alongside occupational therapists and other health and social care practitioners, and gaining experience working with marginalized groups.   

Independent learning is critical to theprogramme and teaching methods include key lectures, group working, tutorialsand seminars. Assessment is viewed as anintegral part of the total learning experience, therefore the assessmentstrategy is linked to the learning outcomes for individual modules, forexample, verbal presentations, poster presentations, written assignments andprojects.

Programme Structure

In practice, occupational therapists work as part of inter-disciplinary teams to provide client-centred care. Our programme structure, therefore, recognises the importance of inter-professional learning and three modules are delivered with students from Physiotherapy and/or Social Work.

Year 1: Occupational Therapy Foundations for Practice; Inter-professional Context of Practice; Challenges to Occupational Health and Wellbeing (All delivered Trimester B starting in January). Practice Education 1: Understanding Occupational Therapy in Practice (Trimester C over the summer); PE2; Investigating Practice Interventions; Occupation in Health and Social Care; Practice Evaluation (Trimester A)

Year 2: PE3: Practice Implementation and Evaluation; Professional Development in the Work Environment (Trimester B); Organisational Behaviour and Professional Practice; (Trimester A) Dissertation (runs throughout the entire year)

Assessment: Written assignments, case studies, reflective reports, portfolio development, research proposal, practice education, dissertation.


GCUSA Student Led Teaching Awards

Fiona Kennedy, Subject Lead/Lecturer in Occupational Therapy won the awards for "Effective Teaching that inspires and motivates learning" in 2009/10 and was nominated in 2010/11. Moyra Muir, Programme Leader MSc (pre-reg) Occupational Therapy programme, won the award for "Effective Teaching that supports and recognises students as individuals" in 2011/12.

Assessment Methods

Successful completion of our MSc (pre-reg) Occupational Therapy programme would provide:

  • A Masters qualification in Occupational Therapy

  • Eligibility to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council

  • Employability skills for working in NHS (hospital and community), local authority, private and voluntary sectors
