Programme Description
Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are infiltrating everyday life, similar to the way the PC did in the late 1980s. The aim of this programme is to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to pursue careers as network professionals. It is concerned with the design, implementation and administration of high performance wired and wireless computer network infrastructures and includes an examination of the methods, techniques, tools and technologies used to develop such infrastructures.
Why Choose This Programme?
The programme will focus on the design, planning, implementation, operation and troubleshooting of wireless networks. It covers a comprehensive overview of technologies, security, and design best practices with particular emphasis on hands-on skills in the following areas: Wireless LAN Setup & Troubleshooting, 802.11 (a, b, and g) Technologies, Products & Solutions, Radio Technologies, WLAN Applications and Site Surveys, WLAN Security, Vendor Interoperability Strategies, and Emerging Wireless Technologies.
Programme Structure
Modules shown are indicative:
Trimester 1:
Advanced Routing, Simulation of Computer Networks, Switching, Research and Project Methods, Ethics and Technology
Trimester 2:
Research and Project Methods, Wireless LANs, Wireless Communication Systems, Network Security 1, Technology and Environmental Management

Trimester 2:
Research and Project Methods, Wireless LANs, Wireless Communication Systems, Network Security 1, Technology and Environmental Management
Assessment
All modules include examinations and coursework. Practical computing forms a significant part of the assessment and this is accomplished through coursework and practical tests.
Professional Accreditation
This programme will prepare students to achieve the Cisco Wireless LAN Support Specialist designation.
Career Opportunities
For graduates of our networking programmes, your specialist knowledge and skills could be used to support and manage information networks in any organisation that uses them, which these days means any organisation of a reasonable size. As this is a role that is essential to the successful running of an organisation, career prospects are excellent. Network management, design, maintenance and analysis are areas of computing and engineering that have a shortage of personnel and therefore command excellent salaries. This area of work is not going to go away as networks become the hub of commercial and industrial development across the world.
