Financial help for students with children

There are different sources of funding for students with children. Each section below offers links to further information.

Student Awards Agency for Scotland funding

If you are a single parent you can apply to SAAS for a Lone Parents Grant.

Nursing and midwifery students can also apply to SAAS for a Dependents Grant.

Child tax credits

You may be entitled to child tax credits from the Inland Revenue. Check the Inland Revenue tax credits website for more details, or phone them on 0845 300 3900. If you are working you may be able to apply for Working Tax Credit which may include a Childcare element award towards registered childcare costs.

Students who receive child tax credits may be able to claim free school meals for their children. You can pick up an application form from your child’s school.
