GCU is committed to creating an inclusive learning environment which anticipates the needs of a diverse student population, including those with additional needs which arise from the impact of an illness or impairment.
GCU offers a summer transition programme for prospective students on the autistic spectrum scale.
A specific programme for students who have, or identify with, a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome
We also make the following information information available to all disabled applicants.
Inclusive provision for all students
As such we provide a range of services and facilities which may in some part meet your specific needs. These include:
- A campus which is wheelchair accessible, with lift access to all teaching rooms and facilities which are above ground level, and automatic door entry at main entrance points
- Fitted induction loops in large lecture theatres, and portable induction loop systems for all other teaching venues
- A private study room for visually impaired learners, with a range of assistive software and hardware, including JAWS, Zoomtext, Kurzweil 1000 and 3000, scanners, facilities for producing Braille copy and CCTVs (to access these facilities, please enquire at the Disability Service
- Provision of Texthelp Read & Write software (a read aloud and proofreading tool) and Inspiration (mind mapping software) on all PCs in the university library and computer labs
- Small group training sessions in the use of Texthelp Read & Write and Inspiration software packages
- Academic support, including advice on appropriate study skills from the Academic Development Tutors (based in the your Academic School)
- One to one and small group advice on academic writing and study strategies, (including support specific to the needs of dyslexic students, from the Effective Learning Service (based centrally in the Saltire Centre)
- Academic Disability Coordinators within each department, offering a first point of contact for disabled students requiring advice or information
Additional provision particular to the needs of individual students
The Disability Team can also assist students to access additional arrangements and facilities which are not generally available to all students at GCU.
