Visual Impairment Unit and Assistive Technology

There is a dedicated area on the third floor of the Saltire Centre where visually impaired and blind students can carry out their everyday computing tasks in the VI section, located in the seminar area on the third floor of the Saltire Centre.

This section offers the following:

Hardware

  • 4 Dell PCs with Flat panel display with speakers and scanners
  • A Braille embosser
  • A colour CCTV with feature pack
  • 1 black and white laser printer

Specialist Software

  • Duxbury – translate word documents into Braille which is available only on one of the PCs
  • Jaws – reads information displayed on screen
  • Kurzweil 1000 – scans and reads documents
  • Kurzweil 3000 – helps with reading and vocabulary
  • Zoomtext – enlarges information displayed on screen

Please note students who require access to this facility must register with the Disability Service in the first instance.

Computing Labs

Please note there is one PC set up with Zoomtext in each computing lab, and it is normally PC labelled number one in the labs.

Assistive Technology

We also offer training in the use of assistive technology and various ergonomic hardware. This can be in the form of either an alternative keyboard or a different mouse.

There are many ways in which this software/hardware can enhance your studies. For further details please contact the Disability Service in the first instance.
