Set security word and question
The IT Helpdesk can only reset passwords by telephone if you have set up a security word on my.Caledonian. All students should do this. You also have the option of entering a security question.
IT Helpdesk staff will ask you to confirm two random letters from your security word. If you get this wrong, they will ask your security question as a reminder of your security word. If you still can't remember, you will need to go to the base to have your password reset.
To set up your security question (and your security word if you haven’t set one up already)

  • Enter your new password in the "New Password" field.
  • All passwords must be at least eight characters and be a mixture of
    • UPPERCASE
    • lower case

If you are a Mac user, you will need one of these helpsheets in pdf format.

You must have a combination of all three of these categories. For example: SkyE2004 or Mi1kyWay (where the l is replaced with the number one). Passwords must not contain all or part of your user account name.

More details about network passwords
  • Do I have to change the network password?
For security reasons, you must change your network password at least every 90 days. You will see a reminder on screen each time you log in during the 14 days before you have to change it. The minimum password age is one day. This is how long you must use a password before you can change it.
  • What happens if I don't change my network password?
When you try to log in, you will see a message on screen telling you that your password has expired. You will have to change your password, before the system will allow you to log in.
  • What is the default username?
This is the username displayed on your matriculation card (it is usually in the form of first initial, first 5 characters of surname followed by 2 numbers, for example JSMITh25).
  • Can I reuse the same password several times?
The password history is set to three passwords. This is the number of new passwords that you have to use before you can reuse an old one.
  • How many log in attempts do I have before I am locked out?
Account lockout is set to five attempts. This is the number of attempts you can have at logging in before the system locks you out. If this happens, you will not be able to log in to the network until you contact the Information Services Desk to unlock your account.

Password restrictions
When you change one of your passwords, your other passwords will not change. If you want to change them, you need to log in to each system and choose the option to change your password.

How to choose a secure password

Do's
  • uSE BoTh UppEr and loWEr Case Characters, digits, punctuation, and !@#$%^&* characters (and not just as the last character of you password). The more complex and random the password is, the harder it is to crack.
  • Some of the best passwords are acronyms that are special to you. For example, if you have a daughter named Mary who is 11 years old, a sentence you would easily remember might be: My daughter Mary is 4 + 7 !, which would create the acronym password MdMi4+7!. Another might be: Three blind mice, See how they run, which would create 3bm,Shtr. These create passwords that are essentially random but easy for you to remember.
  • Be wary of people hanging over your shoulder when you type your password. If you suspect someone of trying to get your password by watching you type it in, report them to the Information Services Desk immediately.
Don'ts
  • Don't use
    • a spouse's name
    • a child's birth date
    • your middle name (which you think no one knows about)
    • your birth date (which you haven't told anyone about, so it "MUST" be safe)
    • your Social Security Number, or similar forms of personal information. This includes mixing these pieces of information, such as using your birth year, your spouse's birth month and your child's birth day. These can be broken in several minutes of guessing, or after a few seemingly innocent conversations with your friends or family members.
    • a word in the English dictionary or a minor variation on that word. Good password cracking programs check the whole dictionary. Many cracker programs now check not only the English dictionary, but several foreign ones too. Some cracker programs also check all the dictionary words with a 1 appended, replace all s's with $'s, reverse the word's spelling, or capitalize the first letter of the word.
    • simple patterns of adjacent letters on the keyboard. On the surface qwerty or asdfgh may seem random, but cracker programs check many of these patterns as standard practice.
  • Never tell your password to anyone. If someone, even someone saying they are the system administrator, E-mails you asking for your password, report it to the Information Services Desk. This is a ploy crackers use to get passwords.
  • Never write your password down.
  • Never send your password through E-mail.
