The Queen's College Collection
The Queen's College Special Collection is a collection of over
700 books, some dating from the 18th and 19th centuries which reflects
the College's history at the forefront of domestic science teaching.
The College began as an amalgamation of the Glasgow School of
Cookery (1875-1908) and the West End School of Cookery
(1878-1908), which joined to become the Glasgow and West of Scotland
College of Domestic Science (Incorporated) (1908-1975) before
becoming first, The Queen's College, Glasgow (1975-1993) and
then, the former Park Campus of Glasgow Caledonian University
(1993-2001).
Of the volumes included in the Collection, the majority are on
the subject of cookery with recipes for various cuisines, palates
and incomes. Other subjects taught at the College such as needlework,
textile design, catering and nutrition are also represented. In
addition there are a number of excellent works of Scottish interest
which have been donated over the years by former principals and
college librarians.
Of particular interest are donations by former pupils. The Collection
contains a number of manuscript notebooks from pupils who studied
at the College at the turn of the century. Some contain needlework
samples and beautiful illustrations. The history and importance
of the College is also reflected in a number of publications by
college staff including the world-famous Glasgow Cookery Book.
As well as providing an excellent overview of the history of the
College, the Collection provides a valuable insight into domestic
fashions and conditions, and particularly into the changing role
of women in society. Now housed in the Norman and Janey Buchan Reading
Room it is hoped that the Queen's College Special Collection will
continue to be used by students and researchers as a valuable research
archive.
