  • Following recommendation, in 2006, from an independent review and feedback from the BDA  membership survey, SNDRí, the BDA and the Scottish Government have been working together to establish a new independent charitable company - Nutrition and Diet Resources (UK).

This decision to form a new charitable company is supported by the Scottish Government and BDA Council, and its main aims will be to:

- harness UK-wide expertise, knowledge and experience, in order to promote best practice for everyone involved in giving nutrition and dietary advice
- ensure consistency of information throughout the UK for service-users
- provide greater economies of scale in terms of quality and cost
- enable further growth in the UK health market by partnership working.

The Scottish Government has indicated continued support for the Initiative beyond 2010 and have now invited the other Home Countries (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) to discuss a shared approach and support for this new charity to reflect its UK-wide focus.

Updates

  • Keep up-to-date with news about food and diet with NHS Choices.
  • Easier Swallowing Pack - Alteration to resource range
People with swallowing problems are at significant risk of being malnourished or becoming malnourished. As such Easier Swallowing resources refs: 9352-9356 and 9358 were developed and pre-tested as resources to be used by dietitians to meet the hydration and nutritional requirements of the individual in the short and long term.
Following the production of these resources a need was identified for first-line information for other health professionals to give to service users/carers following initial assessment and texture determination. First Steps to Easier Swallowing Poster and resource refs: 9350, 9351, 9357 and 9359 from the Easier Swallowing pack were thus developed/identified as first-line information for other health professionals (including Speech and Language Therapists) to use when identifying and giving initial information on change in texture to suit the individual’s swallowing ability.
  • SNDRí’s publications were recognised by the British Medical Association (BMA) at their annual patient information awards held in London on 8 September 2009. How to Get it Right – Paediatric diabetes and diet pack and Practical Ways to Help from the series of Alcohol-related Thiamine Deficiency leaflets were both highly commended, and Healthy Living with Diabetes was commended. These annual awards are part of the BMA medical book competition to recognise quality in written patient information leaflets and small booklets. It aims to encourage the production and dissemination of accessible, well-designed and clinically balanced materials which will enhance patients' understanding of health issues and their ability to participate in decisions about their care.   Judges commented:
How to Get it Right ‘…looks eye-catching and impressive ...individual sections cover different aspects which mean the resource is an excellent reference guide to refer to when necessary…I think parents would find this a reassuring resource to keep at home.’

    Practical Ways to Help
is, ‘…clear and practical…well-produced using good colour, boxes for emphasis and spaces for the user to write in’
Overall, 298 leaflets were entered into the awards. This is a great acknowledgement of SNDRí’s robust, easily accessible and evidence-based nutrition and diet information.   It is also well-deserved recognition of the dedicated work and expertise invested into resource development by the dietitians and other health professionals who participate in SNDRí’s resource project groups. SNDRí’s project manager, Dr Leona O’Reilly, said ‘We are delighted with these acknowledgements. This is the second year that SNDRí has entered and received accolades in this competition. All of our resources are evidence-based, peer-reviewed, have patient involvement and are considered value for money.  We will continue to work with dietitians and health professionals across the UK to build on our success as we believe that quality patient information is an integral part of the patient journey’.
  • SNDRí is pleased to announce the publication of the report of work on food portion sizes commissioned by NHS Health Scotland with FSA Scotland and SNDRí.The findings from the research will be used to inform the development of a portion size resource by SNDRí for health professionals to use with clients.  Information and recommendations in the report will contribute to ongoing discussions on portion size information for consumers led by FSA UK.
