Welcoming international students

The School of Life Sciences hosts students and staff from a diversity of backgrounds from both the UK and abroad. The wide variety of backgrounds leads to many interesting and informative debates in seminar classes where all viewpoints are encouraged to be discussed.

Flexible programmes

Glasgow Caledonian University is based on a modular system, which allows students to chose their modules (courses) of interest from a wide range of optional modules both from the Life Sciences catalogue and other schools’ module catalogues. The number of optional modules available depends upon the chosen programme as many professional bodies insist that certain pathways are taken.

The School hosts a wide range of programmes to suit all interests in the field of Life Sciences. The majority of academic staff in the three departments are research-active, giving Life Sciences one of the best research profiles at Glasgow Caledonian University. Students are encouraged to make use of the staff expertise by getting involved in the exciting new work both in the laboratory and field setting as part of their degree studies. Indeed, many students have, with the support of their supervisors, published their undergraduate or postgraduate projects in peer-reviewed journals.

Excellent support services

Students in the School of Life Sciences have a history of being friendly and helpful towards new students in their classes. Some programmes use a formal peer mentoring system whereby new students are assigned a mentor from the year above who will help with any problems encountered with both academic and social life at Glasgow Caledonian University. All three departments make a confidential support tutor available to help students who may be struggling with the content and structure of their degree programme. Other, less formal, support networks are created by the physical environment of the Learning Café and other student social areas which are set up to encourage group discussion.

The University International Office provides excellent support for the hundreds of international students who chose to study at The Glasgow Caledonian University.
