NIDMAR Occupational Rehabilitation Training Programme

Glasgow Caledonian University is delighted to announce that the NIDMAR training programme is now available in Scotland.

What is NIDMAR?

A training programme for HR practitioners, Occupational Health Professionals, Occupational Therapists and other Vocational Rehabilitation practitioners who wish to increase their absence management skills.

What’s its value?

  • Provides a much needed skill set:
    • Many employers have a very limited awareness of good absence management practices;
    • Few have skilled in-house practitioners to help them manage their sickness absence in-house;
    • Our training can help employers and providers build these skills.
  • Practical
  • Accessible to the working practitioner
  • Available units cover a wide range of skills.
  • Each unit is self-contained and can be completed in a day (plus completion of an assignment in your own time- max 8 hours)
  • Student can choose which courses they want to take, and when

Who developed the programme?

The National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR), in Canada.

  • Design and development led by university research team which involved a broad stakeholder group of government, practitioner, business and labour organisations
  • Based on the International Labour Organization’s Disability Management Standard.
  • Development costs of over Cdn$2.5 million
  • Certified by the International Disability Management Standards Council

Who uses it?

The original training programme attracted a wide range of professionals (medical and non-medical) in the UK, Canada, Germany, Australia and New Zealand who want to increase their skills in occupational rehabilitation and return to work.

The new UK-based training is attracting Occupational Health and HR professionals, as well as Occupational Therapists and rehabilitation providers. Insurance administrators are also looking to the foundation courses to help them better understand the work situation of the cases they are administering.

How much does it cost?

The cost of each unit is £325 . Units can also be offered on site if an employer or provider has sufficient students, and these modules may be offered at a discount.

Where is it offered?

Currently the course is offered by Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland and Brunel University in England.

Teaching at Caledonian will be led by Shirley McCarthy and Roana Dickson both of whom have extensive experience working in vocational rehabilitation and occupational health settings in both the private and public sector.
