Podiatric Medicine & Surgery

Welcome to the Department of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. The department is considered to be at the leading edge of both undergraduate and post graduate Podiatric education and currently offers approximately 50 places per year to the undergraduate course which leads to the award of BSc(Hons) in Podiatry.

The department has pioneered the development of Masters Degrees in both Podiatric Medicine and Podiatric Surgery. These Masters programmes have been accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and are considered "world firsts" in the field of Podiatry. Additionally the department offers a comprehensive suite of short programmes, which helps the practicing Podiatrist to maintain their registration with the Professional Body and the Health Professions Council.

Consultancy activity within the department

Staff within the department has considerable experience in the field of consultancy activity. Over the last number of years staff from within the department have been asked to carry out consultancy activities on behalf of a number of organisations including the World Health Organisation in the field of diabetic foot management,Pharmaceutical and manufacturing companies and the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. Research activity/specialities within division

We have three key research themes in musculoskeletal medicine, diabetes and clinical podiatry. The staff have expertise in research methodologies relevant to clinical investigation including clinical trial design as well as specialist skills in biomechanics, gait analysis, orthotics and clinical diagnostics and interventions. The department has a significant grant and publication track record. Enquiries regarding research should initially be directed to Professor Jim Woodburn.
