About Us
The Dean's Welcome
Welcome to the School of Health and Social Care. The school has a unique professional composition of five Allied Health Professions and Social Work, with over 100 staff providing high quality learning, teaching and research experiences within the Departments of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, Radiography and Social Work.
Wide range of programmes
We offer a wide range of programmes for both those looking to enter these professions and existing practioners. Currently we have 1600 students studying on a wide range of programmes that lead to professional qualifications and employment in key areas in the health and social care sector.
Working in collaboration with our colleagues from the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Community Health and the School of Life Sciences provides us with an ideal platform for inter-professional learning and inter-agency collaboration. Indeed, with interprofessional learning included as an integral component in all of our pre-registration programmes, the school, and the university as a whole, is a recognised leader in inter-professional learning in Scotland.
We strive to develop graduates capable of assuming leadership and who are able to contribute to the body of knowledge supporting health and social care. The undergraduate and pre-registration Master's programmes have a common aim to produce competent practitioners who will be both innovative and creative in their chosen profession.
Practical education
All of our programmes involve educational placements in health and social care settings as a key aspect of study. We also provide the opportunity for inter-professional learning, which prepares students with the skills for effective team-working. Add to this the fact that there is a workforce shortage in all these professions, our graduates are greatly sought after by employers and have no difficulty in gaining employment on completion of their studies.
International students from around the world are present on all of our professions and the School is delighted to respond to enquiries. There are a number of scholarships available for international students, further details can be found on the international students' page.
Post-qualification and continuing personal and professional development opportunities
We also provide a range of opportunities for qualified health and social care professionals to continue their studies through a mix of short courses and postgraduate level study.
Our flexible Master's Framework has been designed to enable qualified practitioners to develop professional skills in a range of specialist areas and allows practitioners, by part-time study, to attain qualifications necessary for advanced and consultant level positions.
When it comes to firsts, our Division of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery has been accredited to teach Master's degrees in Theory of Podiatric Surgery and Podiatric Medicine, the first degrees of their kind in the world. The MSc Podiatric Medicine is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians (Glasgow & Edinburgh) and the MSc Theory of Podiatric Surgery degree has been granted accreditation from the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow).

The School is committed to developing research activity and has embarked on a drive to increase the number of postgraduate research students. Areas of research include:
