Postgraduate Learning Contract Framework

Postgraduate Work Based Learning (WBL) degrees are negotiated programmes, leading to the award of MSc or Doctorate in Professional Practice. Linking learning to existing practices in the workplace provides benefits to both the individual and the employer.

The learning programme is negotiated by:

  • Employees (our prospective students)
  • Employers
  • Academic tutors at Glasgow Caledonian University

Learning Contracts can be developed through any of the Faculties/Schools in Glasgow Caledonian University and can be undertaken from anywhere in the world.

Glasgow Caledonian University's Postgraduate Learning Contract Framework was established to widen and increase access to flexible work based learning at Postgraduate level while supporting the principles of lifelong learning.

Learning Goals

Learning Goals are discrete projects or activities which relate to both individual and organisational development needs. Learning Goals are recorded in a Learning Contract, which is equivalent to the syllabus of a traditional postgraduate degree programme. MSc learners must complete two compulsory Learning Goals: the Reflective Practice & Planning Goal and the Research Methods Goal. Through the Reflective Practice & Planning Goal, you are encouraged to think about your professional background, future career aspirations, working environment and reasons for undertaking a WBL postgraduate degree. This process will enable you to plan the areas of study that you wish to concentrate on. The remaining Learning Goals are negotiated.

Assessment Methods

Assessment for Work Based Learning degrees is flexible and will vary depending on the nature of the projects undertaken. In some cases, it may be appropriate for a candidate to produce a written report. In others, assessment may involve the assessor visiting the candidate’s workplace to observe the candidate or a system in practise.

Practical Application

The overall effect of a Work Based Learning degree is to create a synergy between the knowledge a candidate is gaining and the application of that knowledge in the workplace.
