Back Home Soon
Author: Joe Hartney
One rule
for them and one for you and me
That's the way it is and always will be
So no need for your questions.
Ours not to reason why
But to do the dirty jobs and try
To get out of this place in one piece
And all
the lessons to be taught and learned
The teachers say they've got it all worked out
So be assured your fingers won't get burned
And they won't be turned
Even if it takes us to the very brink
'you'll be back home sooner than you think!'
Been told
it all before
You'll be back by Christmas
And there'll be no need for the tours of duty
But what they say and what you see is a different story.
After the poet's sighs
How can we still teach our kids the same old lies
'Dulce et decorum est pro patria morae'
No need to
worry now the end must be in sight
And every scorching day and frozen night
And situations flight or fight
Bring you closer raise your hopes just to see them sink
'you'll be back home sooner than you think!'
So brave
the bullets, flak and shrapnel
Off-balance-sheet red-ink collateral
You made a pact and its contractual.
Too late for apologies and recompense
All the people weighed out in pounds and pence (dollars and cents)
And so many reasoned arguments
Displayed as if they were common sense
Still, you don't see the sense.
And all the
lessons to be taught and learned
The leaders say they've got it all worked out
So be assured your fingers won't get burned
And they won't be turned
Even if it takes us to the very brink
'you'll be back home sooner than you think!'

"This song was inspired by the brave campaign
of the military families against the war, and partly in response to repeated
promises of politicians to bring the troops back by Christmas!"
