Health and Safety
In alignment with organisational policy Health & Safety, with OD support, offers a range of online H&S learning provision:
IOSH Managing Safely
Provided by RoSPA, relevant staff can achieve an IOSH managing safely qualification by completing eight interactive modules which include video introductions and an online video tutor. The modules are:
- Introducing Managing Safely
- Assessing risks
- Controlling risks
- Understanding your responsibilities
- Identifying hazards
- Investigating accidents and incidents
- Measuring performance
- Protecting our environment
Participants registering for the programme will be expected to complete and pass the course in line with University requirements. RoSPA offers flexibility regarding completion: 3-6 months study time. Please email OD@gcu.ac.uk to request an account.
Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessment
GCU staff are expected to, in alignment with organisational policy, carry out regular DSE assessments online and forward issues to their local DSE Assessor for agreeing solutions, in conjunction with occupational health & safety as appropriate. This brief online course, Cardinus Workstation Safety Plus, includes a training session, text and online risk assessment.

Cardinus Safety for Managers – NEW offering
Safety for Line Managers is a modular course that can be completed over one, or many sittings. It is designed to be configured to your specific needs and can include policy and procedure information.
By completing this course, staff will:
- Understand the organisation’s health & safety policies and procedures
- Be knowledgeable about their key responsibilities in managing the health and safety of staff in line with these policies and procedures
- Know where to find further information and where to get help
Mentally Healthy Workplace
The university is committed to supporting the dignity and wellbeing of our staff. In addition to support available via lifeworks.com Organisational Development, in alignment with Scotland’s healthy working lives award, encourages staff to access the following online course NHS Health Scotland's Virtual Learning Environment: http://elearning.healthscotland.com/login/index.php
In order to complete the online Mentally Healthy Workplace course you'll need to take a minute to create a new account for yourself on this web site. Here are the steps:

Sustainability
Facilities Management lead the Sustainability Initiative. Working with stakeholders we develop policy and procedures in the areas of Waste Management, Catering and Travel working to ensure a sustainable environment. The University has achieved great success winning the Environmental Initiative of the Year Award.
Environmental Essentials
The Environmental Essentials online module introduces the main issues that face organisations in their attempts to better manage their environment risks. The module is designed to help colleagues understand the part they can play in meeting their organisation’s obligations and lessen impacts on the environment.

Travel
OD have partnered with Drum Cussac to provide GCU staff with an interactive online travel awareness course ITRNomad™, the aim being to enhance travel safety and security. This web based e-learning course consists of
- Interactive content to engage and develop an understanding of travel security risks
- Online assessments
- Videos showing real peoples' travel experiences
- Downloadable travel resources
The package is available to all staff travelling on GCU business. Please contact OD to register for an account.
