A GCU lecturer in Podiatry has been awarded Arthritis Research UK’s top prize for research led by an Allied Health Professional.

Dr Ruth Barn has been awarded the charity’s Silver Medal Research Prize for 2013 – the highest level prize for research in musculoskeletal medicine in the UK.

Dr Barn’s PhD investigated tendon disease and flat foot deformity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr Barn said: “I am delighted and honoured to have won this prestigious award and I would like to thank the MSK and Neurological Rehabilitation Research team for their support and of course the patients who gave up their time to participate in the study. I have returned to full time teaching and I am currently exploring opportunities in terms of external funding to advance my post-doctoral research career.”

The prize will be presented at the Rheumatology 2013 meeting in Birmingham in April where Dr Barn will have the opportunity to discuss her work.

Professor Martijn Steultijens, Musculoskeletal Health, said: “This is a real feather in the cap for Ruth, the research group and the wider research effort within the School and Institute. It is a fantastic achievement.”
