Award-winning newspaper editor Charles McGhee has been appointed an honorary professor in Journalism and Media Studies by Caledonian Business School at Glasgow Caledonian University.
 
Mr McGhee, who has edited The Herald and Evening Times and served as president of the UK Society of Editors, will share with the university’s students his knowledge of the industry gained over the past 35 years and develop innovative Continuing Professional Development programmes as well as help shape the university’s undergraduate and graduate courses.
 
Glasgow Caledonian University Principal Professor Pamela Gillies said: “Glasgow Caledonian University is a leading force in the field of Scottish education and research in journalism. We are delighted to welcome Charles McGhee as an honorary professor of our academic community. Charles’ intellectual acuity, experience and insight will guide the university’s future development in this important area. He will also be an inspirational role model for our students.”
Said Mr McGhee: “I am delighted to be associated with Glasgow Caledonian University, which has one of the most sought after multi-media journalism programmes in the UK. I have been highly impressed with the enthusiasm, energy and commitment of the staff and students and look forward to working with them as they develop their ambitious plans for today’s challenging media environment.”
 
A former member of Britain’s press watchdog, the Press Complaints Commission, Mr McGhee moved into media consultancy in 2009 and has been working with international clients in China and Nigeria as well as organisations such as The Crown Office. He also recently served on the government’s Scottish Digital Network Panel which examined the options for establishing a dedicated television service for Scotland.
 
Mr McGhee will join other well-known media figures at the university including Chancellor Lord Gus McDonald and visiting professor Brian Wilson
