The 59th British Sociological Association conference will meet at GCU

The 59th British Sociological Association conference will meet at Glasgow Caledonian University from the 7th – 9th April, generating almost £1million (£925,000) for the local economy.

The convention will attract approximately 500 delegates from across Britain for a full three-day programme including plenary sessions by Professor Loïc Wacquant from the University of California, Berkeley, on penal policy over the last 30 years; Karen Rowlingson, Professor of Social Policy at the University of Birmingham, on poverty and wealth; and Neera Chandhoke, Professor of Political Science at the University of Delhi, on the developing world’s view on global justice.

Glasgow Caledonian University is the perfect setting for the meeting, given not only its central location but also its strength in social justice and social entrepreneurship. Staff and students from the university’s School of Law and Social Sciences are among those who will attend.

The convention is among the biggest to be held at GCU since the opening of the university’s £23million Saltire Centre in 2005.

Professor Sue Scott who is Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning Innovation at Glasgow Caledonian University and immediate past President of the BSA, helped secure the conference.

She said: “Glasgow Caledonian University has a long tradition in teaching social sciences and particular strength in sociological research, linked to its mission of providing high quality learning for ‘the common good’.  The European Sociological Association met here very successfully in 2007, so we are delighted to be welcoming the BSA in 2010.

The BSA represents more than 2,000 sociologists in the UK and this is its main event.  More than 400 academic papers on UK topics including health, crime, education, family, society, equality and sport will be presented.  The theme this year is inequalities and social justice.
