GCU students have secured a record 24 nominations.
STUDENT journalists at GCU have won more nominations in the Write Stuff Scottish Student Journalism Awards 2010 than all other Scottish universities put together.
A record number of 24 places on the shortlists have been won by GCU student journalists, out of a total of 40 nominations.
The students, who are on the university’s NCTJ and BJTC accredited undergraduate and postgraduate multimedia journalism courses, were shortlisted in the following categories: News Writing; Feature Writing; Entertainment Writing and Sports Writing.
Final year undergraduate Gillian Provan won an amazing four nominations, as did third year undergraduate Erik Geddes.
Undergraduate Amir Rashid, and postgraduates Julia Correia, Clare Carswell, Christine Lavelle and Sheanne Mulholland, have each won two nominations.
“Having such a large number of nominees - even more than last year’s record - is great news for GCU, and suggests our emphasis in our teaching on original story gathering and writing is paying dividends," said Ken Garner, senior lecturer and journalism team leader in the university’s Department of Cultural Business. “We’re extremely proud of our students.”
The winners are chosen by local editors and experts from the world of Scottish journalism and receive an award, cash prize and the unique opportunity of a work placement at a leading newspaper. They will be announced at a ceremony taking place in Glasgow City Chambers on May 26.
