Finance Secretary outlines challenges facing Scotland’s economy

John Swinney

Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth, John Swinney, visited GCU this week to address business leaders, staff and students on his plans to strengthen and grow Scotland’s economy.

The event, entitled Opportunities for Scotland’s Economy, was hosted by GCU’s Glasgow School for Business and Society.

Opening his speech, Mr Swinney said: “It’s fitting that my remarks this afternoon are at an institution that encourages its students to be creative in their thinking, international in their outlook and innovative and entrepreneurial in their actions.” Mr Swinney was introduced by Principal and Vice Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies.  Mr Swinney was also interviewed on camera by Craig Telfer and Craig Turnbull, both MA Multimedia Journalism students.

Professor John Wilson, Executive Dean and Pro Vice Chancellor of Glasgow School for Business and Society, said: “We were delighted to host the event. The economic climate, nationally and internationally, is of such significance right now and it was fascinating to hear Mr Swinney’s views on the prospects for Scotland’s economy and its businesses, both in the medium term and in the event of independence.”
