Flexible study options

The School of Law and Social Sciences (LSS) offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, some of which have been developed in the last few years, with new streams and programmes.

Our undergraduate programmes have part time options in Social Sciences and Law (LLB) and you can choose to take individual modules from the Social Sciences if you need to gain new modules for your career development.

Undergraduate programmes

Law Society of Scotland

Our LLB is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland. 

If you want to study the LLB to become a solicitor, you will apply for the Diploma in Legal Practice whilst in your 3rd or 4th year and you are assisted in this, by the programme organiser.

Student Exchange

The BA (Hons) Social Sciences programme currently has student exchange agreements with three US institutions (Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, Ohio Northern University and Northern Kentucky University) and one Canadian institution (Brock University in Ontario).

Students who wish to take advantage of the opportunity for exchange study should submit an application during level 2 of their studies with the actual exchange (of either one or two semester’s duration) taking place during level 3.

Study Abroad programme

From September 2005, the Department of Social Sciences has hosted visiting students under GCU’s 'Study Abroad' programme

This programme offers students from overseas the opportunity to undertake a period of study at the university for either a semester or a full academic year on a fee-paying basis. Further details can be obtained by e-mailing studyabroad@gcal.ac.uk.

Erasmus

An Erasmus/Socrates Intensive Programme (IP) in Sociology commenced in spring 2008,  involvingthe Erasmus University of Rotterdam, the Free University of Brussels, Queen’s University of Belfast, the Universities of Lund, Kalmar, Salzburg, Warsaw, Joensuu (Finland), ISCTE (Portugal), Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria), and Teeside.  New members for 2010 include the Universities of Frankfurt, Marmara (Turkey) and Ljubljana (Slovenia). 

The course in spring 2009 (destination L'Alfas del Pi, Alicante, Spain), consisted of ten student places, allocated to the BA in Social Sciences.  The theme of the 2009 course was 'Diversification or Standardisation in Europe'.  The module is now a fully credited element of the degree.
