The current Library Management System (LMS) is a product called Symphony produced by SirsiDynix. The LMS provides the functionality for the acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, reporting on, and discovery of more than 377,100 library resources. The full acquisition cycle for all library print and electronic books is administered via the LMS; auditing of all vendors and funds, invoicing, and automated electronic ordering via Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
All library books and journals (both print and electronic) and all audiovisual material and equipment as well as the research collections held by the library are catalogued in the MARC21 bibliographic format to AACR2 cataloguing standard in the LMS.
More than 1.2 million circulation transactions (issues, renewal, and returns) are processed by the LMS per year. Circulation is primarily handled by the ten 3M self-service machines in the library as well as online via the OPAC (online Public Access Catalogue), through an automated telephone renewal service (Talking Tech), or in person at the Base which also administers fines for overdue items and holds for popular items.
Statistical data, management data, and administrative data is extracted from the LMS using the built-in reporting tools or by directly interrogating the database using the Oracle Discoverer tool. The library OPAC provides online access to the catalogue allowing staff and students to search and discover the entire library collection, course reading lists, and administer their library accounts. The LMS is now running the latest version of Symphony 3.4 and upgrades will continue with each version release.
