Reading lists
Books on reading lists are in high demand, sometimes for several
modules. We try to make sure we have enough copies by monitoring
use and buying more if we need to.
They are available for 1-week
loan, but if titles are marked 'essential' on reading lists,
we put one copy on the reference (reading lists)
shelves, for use in the library only. We may also do this if we find that a title is in great demand.
Students can
buy reading list books from John Smith’s bookshop on campus (gc@johnsmith.co.uk). They
also have a small stock of second-hand copies of recent editions.
Information for staff:
Ordering reading list material:
- The reading lists fund is separate from your School’s
fund. You do not need authorisation from your
School library rep to order these books. All you need do is send
your reading list as a Word attachment to Readinglists@gcu.ac.uk. The best time is at the end of the second semester or in the summer break. You can email additions separately or amend your list.
- If you want your reading list to remain active on the library
catalogue please submit it each year even if there are no changes.
- Remember to include the following information :
- module name and code
- number of students
- which items are essential reading (1-week loan)
- whether you want any copies for use in the library only
- as much detail as possible (author, title, publisher,
edition, date, ISBN and price - or as many of those as you can).
To help you check book details, there are some
searchable
booksellers databases.
- Please don’t submit reading lists on book order request cards or the on-line book request forms. We need to process reading list order requests separately from other book orders
to make sure the cost doesn't come out of your School's allocation, that we have enough copies, that we add the reading list information to the catalogue and so on.
Scanning:
We will scan journal articles and some book chapters into
PDF files so that you can put them on Blackboard.
Please fill in a scanning request form.
Campus bookshop:
John Smith & Son have a bookshop
on-campus (gc@johnsmith.co.uk). They try to contact teaching staff each summer to find out what
they should order for students for the coming session.
Please note that we don't pass your reading lists on to them. If you want to make sure that your students can buy the books there, please contact the shop in person or at gc@johnsmith.co.uk.
You can also contact
them at any time about stock, prices, availability and so on. They
say that orders are usually delivered in a week to ten days.
