Scanning Service and Request Form
Why use the scanning service?
The scanning service helps you make book chapters and journal articles more easily accessible for your students. We scan the material and provide a URL which you can put up on Blackboard.
What can be scanned?
The material requested must be covered by the Copyright Licencing Agency's Photocopying and Scanning Higher Education Licence. This means:
- The book or journal issue must already be owned by the library
- It must published in the UK, US, Australia, Canada (except Quebec), France, Ireland, South Africa, Ireland or Switzerland, and not published by a company that has opted out of the licence (we will tell you if this is the case)
- Only one chapter from a book, one article from a journal issue or no more than 5% of a published work (whichever is greater) can be scanned
If you would like material scanned which we don't have in the library or which is not covered by the licence (such as a second chapter from a book) please still get in touch as there are other services we may be able to use. Please allow more time for these:
- The HERON service (Higher Education Resources On Demand)
- Copyright-cleared extracts from the British Library
More information on copyright policy.
How we deal with requests
- We will check requests and get back to you if there are any problems or if we need further information
- We will scan material on a first-come, first-served basis and waiting times will depend on how many requests we get
- If the material is already available from the library's electronic collections (ejournals and ebooks) we will refer you to these instead
- We will provide scans in the form of URLs which you can put up on Blackboard for the duration of the module
- We will disable the links after a year but before doing so we will ask you if you'd like the extract to be renewed for another year, in which case we'll send you a new URL.
Please send any enquiries on the scanning service to the team at clascanrequests@gcu.ac.uk
