Serials Solutions is the name of our journal (serials or periodicals) management system.
It gives an A-Z listing of our journal collection (print and online titles), as well as a subject listing. The search screen on Serials Solutions allows you to search for a journal by title. It does not allow searching for journal articles - you need a database for that.
Go to Serials Solutions from the library web page, select Search journals and ejournals from the Search for... drop down menu. There are links to guides and a Finding journals movie. You will need to log in using your Athens username and password before searching for journals.
Main Screen options - browsing or searching
The main screen allows you to browse for a title using an A-Z list or to search using a simple search box with the options - Title begins with, Title equals, Title contains all words and ISSN equals. Use the 'Title contains all words' option to do a keyword search for journals, or if you can only remember part of the title.
When browsing for journals, the titles are shown in batches of 100. They are arranged alphabetically. The entry for each journal title shows what format we have - print, online or both. There is a link to the print record in the library catalogue as well as to the online content. For online content - the dates we have, provider or platform and any password information is given.
Multiple entry points for online journals
Sometimes titles to have multiple entries. Looking at the title - Japanese journal of clinical oncology, there are 4 entries for online access. This is a journal title published by Oxford University Press. We have access to the backfile content: 1971-1995, through the Oxford Journals Online Archive and to the current content - 1996 to present, via Oxford Journals online. These are both platforms provided by the publisher.
There are also options to go to the content via Swetswise and Ingenta. These are common aggregator sites which many publishers allow to provide additional access points for their users. Some of the online content overlaps for this title - so it is up to you which to choose. We have tried to eliminate all unnecessary duplication but sometimes it is unavoidable. It can also be useful if one platform is not working - you can just try another.
Serials Solutions and the library catalogue
For every title on Serials Solutions we have a library catalogue record. When the entries on Serials Solutions are updated, so are the ones on our catalogue. We have separate catalogue entries for print and online journals. This means that for a title which we have both in print and online, there will be 2 entries on the catalogue. The online journal is clearly marked - [electronic resource] so it is easy to spot.
