GMID is produced by Euromonitor. It provides global analysis of company and market information.
You will need an Athens username and password. Go to the library web page and select GMID from either the A-Z database list or the Business subject guide.
There are two main ways to search GMID, the text search and the category search.
This search box is at the top right of all screens in the database. Type in your search term and click go for a quick search. THere is a link to More search options below the search box. This allows you to search within statistics, reports or information sources. If you click the Advanced text search, GMID will display a search form which allows you to build up your search using various options sucha s "exact phrase" and to combine them using and, or and not. This allows you to search without using the category lists used in the other search functions.
When you log in, you go to the Companies page. This shows you the newest company profiles from around the world and also gives links to news stories.
There are two quick search boxes to the left of the screen. You can search for a company by entering the name and clicking go. Select a company from the list and click next. Now select the market sector and geographical area and click run search. You can now choose to display company statistics or company reports. Select the company name and click either view all statistics or view all reports. When viewing the reports, you can click related information links on the right of the screen.
You can also run a quick search for brands. Follow the same steps as for a quick company search.
You can run a category (consumer, industrial or service) search of industries from the main companies page, or go to the Industries drop-down menu for a more specific search. To display useful statistics, choose the Countries and consumers heading and select sub-categories from the list. Now choose one or more geographical area, you can choose a pre-defined section or individual countries. Then click run search. The results screen gives you the option of displaying statistics or country factfiles.
GMID displays icons beside each heading and sub-heading to inducate what type of data is available (statistics, reports or sources) - the key is displayed on the left of the screen.
If you select an industry from the drop down menu, GMID will display a summary page. This will display news items, key trends and latest market reports. You can refine your search by selecting more specific areas from the menu on the left of the screen. This displays the main category search screen which allows you to select one or more specific headings. You can display sub-categories by clicking the + box beside the main section heading. Click the boxes and then click Next. Now choose one or more geographical area and click run search.
The results screen gives you the option of displaying market sector statistics or comapny factfiles. The factfile page shows additional links to related information on the right and gives options to print, save to my research, print or save as a PDF file. When saving to my research, give your file a name, choose whether to allow sharing or not and click save. A link to My research will then appear on the coloured toolbar at the top of the page.
You can either search using the Search countries box to the left of the main comapnies screen, or choose countries from the coloured toolbar.
The Countries page gives a key trends section, a monthly review of G7 economics and news stories. There is a grey box of economic sectors to the left of the page, click on a sector to start a search. GMID displays a list of headings, select one or more and click next. Now choose one or more geographical area and click run search. The results screen gives you the option of displaying statistics or country factfiles. The factfile page shows additional links to related information on the right and gives options to print, save to my research, print or save as a PDF file. When saving to my research, give your file a name, choose whether to allow sharing or not and click save. A link to My research will then appear on the coloured toolbar at the top of the page.
The Consumers and Geographies search operates in the same way as the country search. You can find very useful statistical data and use it to make comparisons between countries.
When viewing statistical information, GMID offers you the options of formatting and saving it in a variety of ways.
There is a grey toolbar which allows you to format your statistics in a variety of graphic styles. Click on the bar chart icon, select a chart style from the drop-down menu and then click go. Once you have displayed the graph you want, you can save it to the my research folder, print, or save as a PDF file. Use the three icons at the right of the grey toolbar.
You can modify the data selection parameters by using the grey buttons on the left hand side of the screen. Click the blue table icon to return to the main statistics results screen.
The main screen offers you the options to export the data: my research, print page, excel file, excel file with layout or PDF file. Look for the icons to the right of the toolbar.
