Copying for educational purposes is permitted provided there is a sufficient acknowledgement and, in the case of the first category below (giving or receiving of instruction) provided such purpose is non-commercial. However the Act is clear that the copying must not be done by a "reprographic process" which excludes photocopying or scanning a work.
In order to permit copying by a reprographic means, (such as photocopying or scanning), many educational establishments obtain a licence from the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA).
Educational purposes fall into two broad categories:
