We understand that for many international students, English is not their first language, and you may be worried about how you will cope with studying in a different language. To help you to continue to improve your language skills, we offer a range of courses and support services – some of which you can access even before you arrive in the UK.
Before you arrive
INTO Get Ready for English
If your offer is conditional on meeting the minimum English language requirements, you will automatically be invited to enrol on our INTO Get Ready for English course.
It is a free, tutored online course that helps you practise and improve your English in preparation for studying abroad. You can take part in the whole course or choose from particular activities that will be of most benefit.
- Get expert, personalised feedback from our UK-based tutors
- Gain a better understanding of your current level in listening, speaking, reading and writing
- Study flexibly in your own time
Once you are here
Taking part in GOLD, our free online tutoring module, may be recommended to continue to help you to improve your English. You can study up to seven hours per week, with two 'live' classes each week. Studying online gives you the flexibility to choose when you want to study, and if you need any help, you can contact your online tutor.
Monitoring your progress
To help monitor your progress and ensure you stay on track, you will be assessed both on arrival and throughout your studies. Working in partnership with Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge, we have produced a standardised assessment for students. Cambridge is recognised as the world leaders in the field of language assessment, providing you with an internationally recognised qualification.
INTO English Language courses
With our intensive preparation course you can improve your IELTS from a minimum of 3.0 (or equivalent) to prepare for a pre-university academic programme or a university degree. With 4 starting dates per year, this course is perfect for students who intend to make rapid progress in their language and academic skills.
This course provides short and intensive preparation in academic English for students who are already academically qualified and are due to start an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at GCU in September. We focus on vocabulary, grammar, style and structure on specific topics related to your degree programme.
