Appointment/Promotion to Academic Roles Annual Round 2011/12

Academic Promotions 2011/12

The 2011/2012 Academic Promotions Process opens on 16 April 2012. The Promotions policy and the criteria for promotion this year remain unchanged. Details of the Policy and the promotions criteria can be found below. This communication highlights eligibility to apply this year, the aim of the process, and directs you to further information, details regarding the Review of Academic Promotions 2012/13 can be found under Section 5 below.

1. ELIGIBILITY

This procedure is open to all staff who wish to apply for promotion/ redesignation to the roles of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and Chair. This also allows individuals on a Senior Management contract to apply to be considered for the conferment of the title of Reader/Professor.

2. AIM
The aim of the Academic Promotions procedure is to provide a fair, transparent and equitable method of measuring staff member’s contribution to the University which has been excellent or outstanding and significantly beyond the requirements of their current role. It has been developed with due regard to the University’s Equality and Diversity Policy.

3. TIMESCALES

  • Launch

Monday 16 April 2012

  • Completed applications (including required references/names of assessors) must be forwarded to the Head of Department

Friday 27 April 2012 (5pm)

  • Head of Department should complete the statement and return the completed application to their Executive Dean* (copying in the applicant)

Friday 11 May 2012 (5pm)

  • SMG review all applications within their School and issue written outcomes, folliowing which all applications must be forwarded to academicpromotions@gcu.ac.uk

Friday 8 June 2012 (5pm)

  • HR team will then prepare appropriate paperwork for the Academic Promotions Panel to consider the applications

*In the event an applicant is applying outwith a School, their application should be submitted to their Line Manager in the first instance by 27 April 2012 then forwarded to the relevant Executive Lead (copying in the applicant) by 11 May 2012.

The appointments/promotions will be confirmed from the date of promulgated decision with a retrospective implementation of 1 August 2012 for payment.

5. ACADEMIC PROMOTIONS REVIEW 2012/13

The Executive Board have agreed to a Review of the Academic Promotions policy to ensure the policy and criteria remain fit for purpose, and this will be undertaken prior to launching the 2012/2013 round in line with the emerging People Strategy. Professor Sue Scott, Vice-Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) will lead that review, for conclusion and approval by December 2012, to allow the revised process to be implemented from January 2013, with effective completion and implementation of the 2012/13 academic promotions round on 1 August 2013. All future rounds would then commence in January for a 1 August implementation date.
