Programme Description

The BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology at Glasgow Caledonian University, in conjunction with Stow College, is the first and only degree of its kind in the whole of Scotland. Glasgow Caledonian has over 30 years experience in delivering high quality healthcare education whilst Stow College was previously responsible for delivering the highly-regarded HNC in Clinical Physiology. Now working together with the NHS, these institutions form an exciting new partnership in the delivery of Clinical Physiology education.
The generic modules on this programme are delivered by highly experienced academic staff who are dedicated to producing high-calibre graduates in a friendly environment with state-of-the-art facilities. Cardiac physiology specialist training is delivered entirely in-house by senior NHS clinical practitioners, thereby ensuring that the specialism specific-material is at the cutting edge of the profession. At present, however, trainees from other disciplines spend 2 weeks per year enrolled on similar specialist modules at either City of Westminster College (neuro and respiratory) or De Montfort University (GI). Credit-bearing work-based training is integrated into the programme to give a fully blended approach to the learning experience.

What You'll Learn

YEAR 1 - Fundamentals of Human Physiology, Mathematics, Statistics and IT, Fundamentals of Signal Processing, Health Service Practice, Work-based Learning 1, Clinical Specialism 1
YEAR 2 - Applied Clinical Physiology, Fundamental of Pathophysiology, Physiological Measurement and Signal Processing 1, Introductory Psychology for Health Professionals, Work-based Learning 2, Clinical Specialism 2
YEAR 3 - Physiological Measurement and Signal processing 2, Fundamentals of Drug Action, Introduction to Statistics (Health), Physiology and Biochemistry of Exercise, Introduction to Statistical Inference (Health), Work-based Learning 3, Clinical Specialism 3
YEAR 4 - HOnours Project or Dissertation, Case Studies - Integrating Theory and Practice in Clinical Physiology, Pathophysiology and Therapeutics, Work-based Learning 4, Clinical Specialism 4

Work Placement

Work-based clinical education is integrated into the structure of the programme, allowing formal credit-bearing recognition of the work undertaken by studentsin their place of employment.

Professional Accreditation

This programme is accredited by the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP).

Assessment

The core modules on this programme are assessed using a combination of formal examinations, coursework execrises, laboratory reports, clinical case studies, data analyses, essays, Honours dissertations or project theses, whilst clinical practice elements are assessed by annual completion of work-based portfolios (Individual Records of Clinical Practice) and Professional Body examinations that are undertaken in years 2 and 4.

Mode of Study
