Gordon is a Fellow of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists: Fellow of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine; Fellow of the Higher Education Academy; member of the British Association of Human Identification; member of the International Association for Identification; member of the Forensic Science Society; Chartered member of the Institution for Safety and Health; associate member of the Academy of Expert Witnesses.
He is currently working on his doctoral thesis in the field of forensic podiatry, is the only Scottish podiatrist who holds the Certificate of Competency in Forensic Podiatry (Barefootprint/Footwear)and is consulted by police forces throughout the UK for CCTV gait analysis and footprint analysis and is one of only four UK Podiatrists who currently holds this award. His name is held on the National Policing Improvement Agency database to help in criminal cases. He is frequently asked to give expert opinion in civil cases by many legal firms throughout the UK.
He has published widely in the areas of occupational hygiene, occupational safety and health and now Forensic Podiatry
He is a chartered safety and health practitioner advising the professional body on safety and health matters and produced numerous guidance documents in safety and health. Gordon is currently Vice Chair of the Forensic Podiatry Special Interest Group in the UK.
Gordon frequently presents work Internationally at Conferences in Occupational Hygiene, Occupational Medicine, Podiatry and in the field of Forensic investigations.
Gordon is also a Registrant Partner with the Regulatory body for Allied Health Professions, the Health and Care Professions Council, sitting on Investigating committee panels, Fitness to Practice and Health Panels and is also a Visitor for new and approved programmes as well as a CPD Auditor
Gordon has over 34 years of teaching and learning experience and has successfully directed 3 students to completion of their Doctoral Thesis and over 15 at Masters level. He undertakes teaching in the areas of podiatry but also Research and Research Methods, and the cross School Interprofessional Learning framework.
He is currently Programme Lead for the Masters in Podiatric Medicine, the Masters in Podiatric Surgery jointly managed with Queen Margaret University and the Masters in Podiatry at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Current research interest is that of Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety problems affecting Allied Health Professionals such as Back care, Back and Neck pain, Work Related Upper Limb Disorders, Stress, Violence and Aggression. The Environmental area constitutes research involving collaborative work with industry into air contamination and air filtration and work is progressing with two commercial firms, Clean Air Ltd and Purex Ltd, into how fume and dust extraction systems can help reduce health effects within the health and beauty care industries. Working closely with industry can help ascertain innovative solutions to prevent or minimise hazards and risk from pollutants such as chemicals, blood borne viruses and air contaminants such as bacteria and fungi. The work is multi-disciplinary and multi agency by nature incorporating biologists, fungi experts, engineers and designers and is leading to national guidelines for both the health and beauty industries preventing or reducing risk.
