Biopta is a spinout of an established and growing pharmaceutical contract research organisation (CRO) from Glasgow Caledonian University, which provides drug-tissue interaction measurement services to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, academic and research industries. Biopta is also developing novel testing instruments for the same customer base.
Biopta co-founders Drs Chris Hillier and David Bunton of Caledonian developed and patented the new instrument technology. It combines advances in both biology and optoelectronics.
Biopta's proprietary system, Perf-Exion®, addresses a critical bottleneck in pre-clinical testing of drug leads, delivering significant improvements in the throughput, sensitivity and cost of tissue testing. Perf-Exion is a platform technology that can be used for traditional lead discovery testing, toxicology screening and in emerging markets, for example, gene therapy testing. Perf-Exion addresses a $2 billion market.
