The Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare (CSHHH)

The CSHHH is made up of history staff from Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Strathclyde, supplemented by visiting researchers and postgraduate students. CSHHH activities focus on issues arising from the social history of health and healthcare in modern societies.

The main aims of the centre are to:

  • produce high-quality research on selected topics that focus on the social history of health and healthcare.
  • provide training for Master's students through the MSc Health History and PhD students.
  • encourage local, national and international collaboration with appropriate academics and health care providers.
  • improve dissemination of research and develop public engagement activities.

Annual Lecture
Our Annual Lecture, given by Prof. Mark Harrison of the University of Oxford, will take place on Wednesday 6 October 2010, in B024 at 5.00pm. His subject will be, Medicine in an Age of Commerce and Empire: Britain and its Tropical Colonies, 1660-1830.

 

Research Seminar Series
Our Autumn Seminar Series on Global Histories and the History of Health and Healthcare in the British Empire, will begin on Wednesday 13 October 2010.

Perspectives on Modern Maternal Health and Healthcare - c1850-2000
A workshop, organised by Dr Janet Greenlees, took place at Glasgow Caledonian University on 22 and 23 April 2010. A full programme of speakers is attached.

 

Royal Historical Society Symposium
Members of The Royal Historical Society visited the University on Wednesday 14 April 2010 for a symposium entitled, "Science and the Human Subject in History."  The keynote speaker Professor Hal Cook of Brown University spoke on, "Medical Specifics and the reconfiguration of the Body in Early Modern Europe." 'Child Health and Welfare in Europe and the United States, 1914-2000' conference
An international conference on Child Health and Welfare in Europe and the US, 1914-2000, took place at the university between 13-15 January this year. The conference programme and a photograph of some of the delegates attending the conference dinner at the Pyper's Tryst Restaurant in Glasgow, is available.

 

Award for Prof. John Stewart

Prof. John Stewart has recently had the Award of Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences conferred on him for his contribution to the Social Sciences. He attended the President's Lunch on Friday 18 December 2009 and was welcomed formally to the Academy. Photos show John receiving his award from the Academy President, Prof. Sir Howard Newby; and also John with his wife Sue.
