Permanent Collections
The permanent exhibition of the Museum highlighted the main areas
of concern in Social Care, centred mainly on Glasgow
and
the West of Scotland, but with reference to the whole
of Scotland, and where appropriate further afield in the United
Kingdom and the rest of Europe.
The Gallery display emphasised the following areas of concern:
- Housing and homelessness
- Poverty and poorhouses
- Health, nursing and hospitals
- Religion and church
- Childcare and education
- Crime and punishment
- Disability issues
- Work and unemployment
The artefacts of the Museum are presently in store but are available for research and possible loan for exhibtion purposes.
Temporary Exhibitions
The Museum regularly mounted temporary exhibitions both in the University
and off-site in collaboration. These exhibitions are available for study and research. Past exhibitions included:
| The British Workman |
a captivating Victorian journal which sought
to educate and improve the lot of "the British workman". |
| Lennox Castle |
highlights the people who lived and worked in this very
large hospital for people with learning disabilities between
1936 and 2002. |
| Golden Bridge |
an exhibition highlighting the migration of children
from Scotland to Canada 1870-1930. |
| Containment |
explores why human beings seek to contain people in
institutions whom they fear or cannot understand. |
| Neighbours |
highlights the change in the pattern of caring from
the founding of the NHS to the Care in the Community Act 1993. |
| Rebuilding lives |
the re-establishment of long stay patients from Lennox
Castle hospital for people with learning difficulties, back
into the community. |
| Out of Doors |
an in-depth look at all forms of homelessness including tied housing and travelling people and advised by Big Issue vendors. |
| Not Guilty |
an investigation into various aspects of the historical and contemporary treatment of young offenders, with special reference to alternatives to custody. |
