The Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health at GCU alongside other social business organisations and individuals recorded a video message for Social Business Day on 28th June.
Social Business Day was organised by the Grameen Creative Lab in Germany and the Yunus Centre in Bangladesh and takes place in Dhaka on the 28th June each year to celebrate the social business concept that was penned by Professor Muhammad Yunus in his book ‘Building Social Busienss’. In addition, 28th June is Professor Yunus’ birthday. Social Business Day 2011 began in Dhaka with Professor Yunus giving a keynote speech with other speakers such as Professor Barbara Parfitt of our Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing and Eric Lesueur, Project Director of Veolia Water to discuss why social business is an effective tool for achieving the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. Throughout the day there were panel discussions from various speakers such as Rokia Rahman, President of the Bangladesh Federation of Women Entrepreneurs. The last session of the day in Dhaka was just for students where Professor Yunus spoke to local and international students about social business.
The day was accompanied by an online event which included social business organisations and enthusiasts giving online video messages and live streaming. The Yunus Centre of Social Business and Health message was broadcast at 4.30pm on the 28th June. To see our video please click here.
Social business activists and enthusiasts from Kyushu University in Japan, National University of Singapore, Danone Communities teams in China, Cambodia, India, France and Senegal, the Grameen Creative Lab teams in Germany and Colombia, and others from China, France, USA and beyond celebrated Social Business Day.
Social Business Day intends to bring international champions of social business together with the youth and corporate sector for a time of sharing knowledge and networking. It also aims to spread the message of social business to a wider audience and celebrate social business achievements. Lastly to inspire entrepreneurs, students and companies to create their own social businesses.
