Entry Requirement: Qualifications

Applications for PhD programmes are generally required to hold a first class or second class honours degree from a UK University of a qualification which is regarded by the Higher Degrees Committee as equivalent to an honours degree.

Applicants should make sure they have the entry requirements of their chosen programme of research study.

English Language Requirements

GCU uses the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and requires a score of 6.5 with no elements less than 6.

Cost of Study and Funding Sources

The cost of study will vary from person to person.

  • Living costs: in addition to tuition fees, we estimate that a full-time student will need to budget a minimum of £700 per month to cover accomodation, maintenance, recreation and other expenses.

Research Degree Start Dates

Applications can be made throughout the year, with programme start dates of:

1 October, 1 February and 1 May each year.

Hours of Study

A full time PhD student should normally devote 35 hours per week to their studies: a part time student on average should devote at least 12 hours per week but under 21 hours.

*the minimum period for a PhD candidate, whether registered for PhD direct or by MPhil/PhD route, engaged in a programme of research including formally assessed postgraduate study shall be 2 years and 9 months for full time students and 3 years 9 months for part-time students.
