Waste Management

New Waste Contract

GCU has entered into a new waste contract with Shanks which took effect from 1 September 2011 and will see the University divert 80% of its waste from landfill within the first 6 months of the contract and by continual improvement eventually have zero waste to landfill. How will we achieve this?

Logistical Roll-out of Waste Storage & Collection on Campus

The Situation at Present

GCU has traditionally provided a waste to landfill service for staff and students with limited access to recycle points.  This is no longer sustainable or desirable and we have therefore entered into a contract with Shanks which will see us diverting 80% of waste from landfill within 6 months and by continual improvement eventually have zero waste to landfill, in line with the Scottish Government’s target.

At present staff and students are given access to waste paper bins which are lined with black sacks.  These are serviced daily by the domestics who take the black sacks to a collection point on each floor where storemen then remove them to the compactor.   When full the compactor is emptied to landfill.

All food waste on campus is either routed to landfill by various collecting methods throughout the campus or via waste disposal units in the catering kitchen.

New Service

Mixed Recycle

On or around 3 October 2011, recycle bins, known as Tree Huggers will be placed on all floors.  Open plan areas where there are a number of staff working will have the Tree Huggers in their office.  Other rooms with just a couple of staff will have access to Tree Huggers in the corridors and circulation areas.

When we deliver Tree Huggers to an area the domestic will leave the waste paper bin in place for one month but will remove the black sack.  This should help persuade people not to use the bin.  If the bins are used the domestic should empty into a black sack and leave a flyer asking for the person's help to recycle with a contact number to discuss.  After one month the waste bins should be removed altogether.

The clear bin liners in the Tree Huggers will be collected by the domestics and delivered to the collection points where storemen will uplift them and transport them to the compactor.  The compactor will now become our recycle compactor.  This will be emptied on request by Shanks who will take the waste to their recycle centre.

Any waste to landfill we get will be collected in black sacks and stored in general waste bins, which will be uplifted by Shanks and taken to their waste centre where it will go through processes to remove items and the residue will go to landfill.

Food Waste

Food waste will now be collected within all the university catering outlets and stored separately in dedicated brown bins which will be lined with clear plastic bags.

Food waste in pantries will be collected in bespoke bins with signage in place showing what food items can be recycled.   Bins will be checked daily with a contact number to call when full.

Shanks will collect food waste through a programmed uplift and on-call basis.  All food will be taken to an Anaerobic Digestion Plant for process.

Please note the central point for waste storage is at the rear of the Hamish Wood Building.

  • Food waste: is stored in designated brown bins
  • The compactor: to be used for mixed recycle only.
  • Large skip: to be used for furniture which can't be reused or recycled, wood, heavy metal, machinery etc. this skip should only be used with the prior permission of Facilities Management.
  • Wheelie bins: to be used for black bag waste to landfill

All contractors carrying out work on campus must supply their own means of waste collection as per their contract with the University
