Emergency procedures and policies
Any member of staff or student discovering a fire should set off the alarm at the nearest available fire alarm point and should immediately call the telephone operator (ext 2222) (or 0141 273 1999 if using a landline or mobile phone) giving details of the location of the fire. Information to include (where possible): floor and room numbers.
When the alarm sounds, staff and students should evacuate the building along the nearest fire escape route as quickly as possible, without stopping to take equipment or possessions. Lifts must not be used. Since each building has a separate fire alarm, only the building in which the alarm is sounding will be evacuated. Evacuation of other buildings will be authorised, if necessary, by the Fire Convenor.
All occupants should proceed to the designated Fire Assembly Point. Assembly points are indicated on Fire Action Notices throughout the building. Do not re-enter the building until advised to do so by the Fire Convenor.

In pursuing a safe and healthy environment, the University is committed to preventing and controlling hazards that could result in personal injury or ill health and minimising the effects of accidents and incidents that may occur, by providing first aid resources and supporting a network of First Aiders.
The University aims to provide first aid resources based on the requirements of The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. In practice, this means that the University is required to provide a system of First Aid that includes the nomination and training of First Aiders and the provision and maintenance of First Aid Kits.

We are very mindful of the need for people to work on their own especially in the evening and at weekends and have set up a lone worker procedure.
PEEPS (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans)
Under fire safety legislation all buildings within the Campus have been risk assessed. Contained within the Risk Assessment (RA) is the requirement to make provision for evacuation of all staff, students and visitors. This is to include less able bodied and those requiring assisted evacuation during an emergency evacuation.
The aim of the PEEP is to provide an agreed evacuation plan containing all the information required to effect safe egress from a building for a student or member of staff requiring assistance to leave following an untoward incident.
The PEEP should:
- Ensure all staff members regularly involved with the staff member/student identified are aware of evacuation plans and adjustments.
- The collation of the PEEP is the responsibility of the department / school’s Health and Safety Chair or elected responsible person. The PEEP is to be reviewed periodically in line with timetabling requirements and nature of disability.
- The person requiring assistance is aware of escape routes and protocols in event of an incident.
Responsibilities are clearly defined and agreed.
